For eleven years now, the critically lauded LANUGO has been coursing the waters of the Czech music scene. This hard-to-classify group (pop? rock? alternative? jazz? indie?) fronted by vocalist Markéta Foukalová and backed by two drummers put out its first album in 2009. After a busy live schedule, their second album came out two years later, launched at the National Theater’s New Stage – and brought them not only an Apollo nomination, but also the opportunity to open for Hooverphonic at their Prague show. Their next album, partially financed through a crowdfunding campaign on HitHit was preceded by a “taster EP”, was in the works for three years.
Lanugo’s music is characterized by a unique mix of various genres, usually served up in a somewhat intimate atmosphere with carefully built-up timing. All is underscored by the unobtrusive virtuosity of all the musicians, which however never gets in the way of sometimes even minimalist interludes. If you want to experience something more than “just” an ordinary listening experience, Lanugo is the right choice.
